Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is considered to be one of the most powerful and effective ways of gaining long term control over unhealthy emotions and self-defeating behaviours. It is a structured, short-term form of psychotherapy that is particularly useful for helping people deal with emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders and low self-esteem.

CBT is probably the most widely researched form of therapy. Many hundreds of studies have shown CBT to be as effective as anti-depressant medication in alleviating some forms of depression and more effective than medication for preventing the recurrence of depression. Evidence such as this means that CBT is recommended within the NHS as the principal form of talking therapy for Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress, Eating Disorders, Panic, Insomnia, and many other conditions.

In CBT the emphasis is on helping clients to build new skills, and for you to effectively become your own therapist. The idea behind this is summed up in the well-known saying;

"If you give a hungry person a fish, you feed them for a day - teach that person to fish and you feed them for life".

Clinical Hypnosis is a very useful addition to a number of CBT treatments, and can help clients to reinforce the ideas they learn in CBT. Stress, phobias, anxiety, habit disorders, IBS, pain control, and of course smoking, are all issues that are particularly suited to treatment with hypnotherapy.
