CBT for anxiety

Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a form of counselling or psychotherapy that works by helping people to change the way they think about themselves and about situations they find themselves in. It is a focused process and is orientated towards discovering the source of your upset and then finding practical solutions to help you think in more realistic and appropriate (and helpful) ways.

In contrast to traditional analytic psychotherapy which might last for months if not years, CBT is relatively brief, lasting anywhere from 5 to 15 sessions.

CBT works best if you have specific issues you wish to address. Issues that are particularly appropriate for CBT include;

  • Anxiety and Stress problems
  • Depression
  • Anger management
  • Guilt and shame
  • Jealousy and hurt
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Panic Attacks
  • Social phobia and Agoraphobia (specific phobias like flying, vertigo, animals, etc. are better tackled using hypnotherapy)
  • Obsessive-compulsive Disorder
  • Eating problems

There is additional information about CBT on the next web page How CBT works. More detailed information can be found on several internet sites, with a particularly good explanation published by the charity MIND

There are various forms of CBT, all of which operate in similar ways to help resolve emotional and behavioural problems. The form that Simon Simpson practises is REBT (Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy)
